The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) prepares standards for sunglasses and UV protection. The ANSI Z80.3-1996 Sunglass and Fashion Eyewear Standard specifies certain properties and performance requirements for non-prescription sunglasses and fashion eyewear.

The ANSI Standard was developed by consensus among representatives from government, academia, the eye care professions and industry. It is the only recognized standard on the properties and performance of sunglasses.
 
   
  Sunglasses must meet the standard to be classified in a particular category. Key categories are listed below.
